Caring for Waterfowl: A Specialty of Our Exotic Animal Clinic

Waterfowl are diverse birds commonly found near water sources, such as lakes, rivers, and wetlands. The group includes over 160 species, including ducks, geese, and swans. At The Bird and Exotic Hospital, our exotic bird vets are passionate about caring for birds and exotic animals and educating our clients about these fascinating creatures’ unique characteristics, behaviors, and needs.

The Types of Waterfowl

Ducks are some of the most common waterfowl, with over 120 species worldwide. They are known for their waterproof feathers, which keep them dry even when they dive underwater. Depending on their species, ducks also have specialized filter-feeding or grazing bills.

The Mallard, for example, is an omnivore and eats plant matter and small animals. The Wood Duck is primarily an insectivore and eats insects, crustaceans, and mollusks.

Geese are well-known for their honking calls and V-shaped flying formations during migration.

There are 29 species of geese, and they are found worldwide. They are herbivores whose diet consists mainly of grasses, sedges, and other plants. Geese are highly social and form lifelong bonds with their mates.

Swans are the largest waterfowl known for their elegant appearance and long, graceful necks. Swans are also monogamous and mate for life. The diet for swans typically consists of aquatic vegetation, such as algae, pondweed, and waterweed. They may also eat small fish, insects, and crustaceans, but these items comprise a small portion of their diet.
