Exotic pets are not like dogs and cats. Each species has their very own set of characteristics that set them apart and make them unique. The veterinary team at The Bird & Exotic Hospital believes in the importance of educating each pet owner on the characteristics of their unique pet to help adjust expectations for them. We will educate you on the differences between prey animal and predator animal behaviors, help you manage your expectations for your pet, assist you with optimizing your household to create the best possible environment for your pet’s needs, and show you how to get your pet started on the right path from their infancy.
Exotic Pet and Bird Boarding
Is your pet in need of a place to stay while you travel? We provide boarding services for exotic pets of all types at The Bird & Exotic Hospital. If your pet has a transportable habitat, you may bring the home they are used to when they come to stay at our hospital. We also recommend bringing your pet’s own diet if they have special dietary needs or restrictions. We normally provide Harrison’s Bird Foods to our bird boarders. If your bird is not used to eating this diet, then please bring the food he or she normally eats, as sudden changes in diet are not ideal. We recommend that you do send your pet with information about their normal schedule, including feeding amounts and times, as it is healthier for pets to maintain the same diet that they are used to during their boarding visit with us.
Complementary Pet Care
For pet owners who are interested in trying new or alternative approaches to their pet’s care, we have options available. The Bird & Exotic Hospital is equipped to provide laser therapy treatments as an alternative, non-invasive, non-medicinal pain management treatment option. We are also able to provide an herbal approach to a variety of conditions or health needs, but it is important to note that in the world of exotic pet care, sometimes conventional medical treatment is the most effective option. We will work closely with you to discuss your pet’s specific medical needs and ensure that we are making the best choice for them and for you!
Bird Grooming and Exotic Pet Grooming
When your pet needs a wing trim, a nail trim, a beak trim, and more, come to the exotic pet experts. At The Bird & Exotic Hospital, we provide exceptional grooming services tailored to the needs of your specific pet and their species.
Is your pet picky? At The Bird & Exotic Hospital, we can provide medication compounding to provide your pet with the flavor of their choice. This helps to ensure that medication is the most suitable for each patient and each patient type.
Medication compounding allows us to increase the range of options of medication preparations available so we can safely give small pets an appropriate dose in a form that is more easily administered.
Most medications come in forms not appropriate for nontraditional pets—they may be too difficult to divide up for a precise dose, or too concentrated. Compounding allows us to take, for example, a medication found in pill-only form for a much larger animal, and change it to a liquid that can be precisely measured for a tiny pet. Many exotic animal clinics will send clients to a compounding pharmacy which normally will be difficult to get to, so we make it convenient for you by providing this service right here at our facility, taking far less time to get your pet’s medicine to you!
Your pet’s nutrition and diet is one of the most important aspects of their care! For exotic pets, health problems can develop quickly and the best way to ensure they have a strong, healthy foundation is to provide a complete, balanced diet for their needs.
At The Bird & Exotic Hospital, we may provide prescription diets for some pet needs, but our primary focus is on serving balanced diets to each pet. We will work closely with you to ensure that your pet is receiving the correct type of nutrition for their specific needs. Our veterinarians like to see our patients eating a diet best balanced for their needs. As an example, we suggest a high quality organic whole-grain pellet and supplemental fresh vegetation for many of our bird patients. We may occasionally offer nutritional supplementation when a sick pet needs to get back on track quickly. We’ll be happy to discuss your pet’s specific needs and care requirements with you; please contact us to schedule a nutritional consultation!
Our pets often like to be entertained and amused. For your pet’s pleasure, we provide a variety of animal toys, books, and videos to keep the education going after you leave here, and even gifts for bird lovers. Contact us or visit The Bird & Exotic Hospital for details!
Surgery for Exotic Pets
Surgical care for exotic pets requires the most particular care, and the veterinary team at The Bird & Exotic Hospital takes many precautions to ensure that we are providing exceptional surgical services for our patients. We carefully monitor using modern equipment to ensure that each of our patients is as safe as possible while under anesthesia.
Testing for Medical Conditions and Sick Care
Is your pet showing signs of illness? There is no time to waste. Exotic pets, especially prey animals, often keep signs of illness hidden for as long as possible because of an instinctive tendency to avoid showing the appearance of weakness. At The Bird & Exotic Hospital, we provide a range of exceptional diagnostic services specifically for small mammals, avians, and exotics.
